Best Gothic Art by Caspar David Friedrich

Not only is he one of the most famous artists from the Romantic era; Caspar David Friedrich is perhaps the best gothic painter of all time. For that reason, he deserves a spotlight. Although he really doesn’t have a bad painting in his porfolio, some works are more beautifully gloomy than others. To honour him, the Council of the Lost has therefore ranked the 10 most amazing gothic paintings by Mr. Friedrich.

To make it a little bit simpler than the Best Gothic Love Songs of All Time Ranking, we’ll judge by these three criteria:

• Beauty: how good does the painting look?
• Darkness: how strong is the “gothic feel”?
• Originality: are there a thousand others like this one or is it unique?

Final note: I am specifically looking at Friedrich’s gothic paintings. That will leave out some of his best works, because they are simply not the best suited for this particular list. Therefore, my apologies in advance for those who love “Wanderer Above A Sea of Clouds”. It didn’t make the list. Enjoy! (Oh and push the arrow to the right > if you don’t want spoilers!)
